Tip of the Day 9/21: Geotagging Makes Photos Location-Aware

In our weekly Tech Tuesday tip, we tell you how to use technology to help you geocache.

Geotagging is a great way to associate the pictures you take with the places you’ve been. It’s also a good way to show other geocachers what scenery to expect when they go after a cache. Photo sharing services now make geotagging pretty easy. Upon uploading your photos, you have the option of dragging them onto a map. Sites like Flickr and Google’s Picasa automatically tag those photos with the appropriate coordinates based upon where you drag them. You can even also tag those photos with a GC number to make it easy to remember what cache you were looking for when you snapped the picture.

For an example of geotagging in action, go to Google Maps and look up Carnation, WA, which was the site of GeoWoodstock VIII. Select the “More” option and check the “photos” box. You’ll then to the be able to see geotagged pictures submitted by visitors to GeoWoodstock (see screen shot at right). Surprisingly, Geocaching.com does not support geotagging in its gallery images. Perhaps this is because Groundspeak doesn’t want to be in the photo sharing business. This seems a pity, since features like finding caches along a route would be enhanced by virtual tours.

Renewing Geocaching Friendships

At Geowoodstock VII in 2009, we had the good fortune to run into the Campbell family from Spokane, WA (and now also Denton, TX) in a lunch line. We had a great time talking to them, and we loved their clever geocaching handles. The first photo below, which ran on page 25 of The Joy of Geocaching, was one of our favorites.

So you can imagine how thrilled were to run into the Campbells again at Geowoodstock VIII. Bikely & Wifely are closing in on 4,000 finds and Trekly & Psychly have just over 1,500. T&P were married last year and are students at the University of North Texas. Casey is working on his master’s and Bethy is closing in on her doctorate in counseling psychology. Lee & Cookie are empty-nesters in Spokane who always enjoy the chance to get together with the kids for a little family caching. Great to see you all!

We’re off to Washington state tomorrow for GeoWoodstock VIII, which promises to be a fun-filled and busy weekend! Our booth on Saturday is going to be situated between Remlinger’s Farms’ booth and Clear’s booth, so look for us and come by to say hello!

At our booth, we’ll be selling and personalizing copies of The Joy of Geocaching. The GW special price is one for $12.95 or two for $22. We can take cash, check or credit cards (MC, Visa, AmEx, Discover). Stop by and buy copies for all your geocaching buddies.

We’re also going to be giving away our special Joy of Geocaching geocoins to 25 lucky people who buy our books on Saturday. One out of every 10 books will have a red dot on page 118. If you get one of these books, you get a coin. Easy schmeezy! These coins are already activated, so you can circulate them right away or keep them as souvenirs.

If you don’t win a coin and want one, no worries. You can buy one! We’re selling 40 coins at GW8 for $8 each. These coins are not activated, so they are entirely yours to do what you want with them.

We’d love to meet face-to-face all the people we’ve only talked to over the phone or chatted with over email during the process of researching our book. In fact, we’d love to get a picture taken with every cacher mentioned in the book and figure GeoWoodstock is a great way to kick-start that goal. So bring your smiles!

If you bought a copy of our book at another venue (bookstore, Amazon, whatever) and want us to sign it for you, we’d be more than happy to do this!

We will also be running our video camera and hope to get some great stories on tape. So if you’ve got a wonderful geocaching story (think: cops, wildlife, wonderful containers, tricky puzzles, truly great adventures), we’d love to get you on video talking about it! We’ll post the videos on our site and on our Facebook page.
