Tip of the Day 10/6:Choosing a GPSr —turn-by-turn directions

In this post on Choosing a GPSr (GPS receiver),we’d like to explain why or why not you may consider turn-by-turn directions.

Units with auto navigation can guide you to a point with voice guidance. Few handheld GPS units do this well when it comes to being precise enough to geocache. You can invest in software that turns your handheld into a decent auto nav system, but screen size can be a limitation. If you need extensive auto guidance,it’s best to buy a unit designed specifically for that purpose.

Most (if not all) handheld devices we’ve seen can’t talk to you like a Garmin Nuvi can,for instance. So driving while deciphering a small screen’s instructions can be dangerous. Unless,of course, you’ve got a passenger willing to direct you.

  • I have a nuvi 1390t,which is great for driving directions, but it seems hard to use in the field and not very accurate to pinpoint the location …would a handheld serve me better once I have driven to the general location with the nuvi?

  • Your auto navigation system will work fine until the first heavy rainfall or its first bath in a puddle,at which point it will become an expensive paperweight. Auto navigation systems are not designed to be held in the hand or to withstand the rigors of the outdoors. You can buy used GPS such as the Garmin 60 for less than $100. It’s a smart investment.
