Tip of the Day 8/24:How to Search Geocaching.com

Groundspeak likes to say that in geocaching,“You are the search engine,” and it underlines that point by providing some of the weakest search functionality of any website we’ve seen. For example,to search for a user, you must know the exact syntax of the user’s geocaching handle or you’ll get an empty search result.

Google to the rescue. Fortunately, the market-leading search engine does a great job of indexing geocaching.com pages –much better than geocaching.com does,in fact. To confine your searches to the site, simply add the command “site:geocaching.com” to the search query,to get something like this:

PnD site:geocaching.com

You can also use search terms in quotations to specify exact wording. This enables you to conduct some searches that are difficult or impossible to do on geocaching.com. For example,if you’re looking for caches with a Revolutionary War theme in the Valley Forge area, you can construct a query this way:

“revolutionary war”“valley forge”“a cache by”site:geocaching.com

By using the string “a cache by”,you increase the likelihood that the search results will be cache listings because that text string is unique to GC listings.

You can do the same thing by downloading caches into a software program like Geocaching Swiss Army Knife, but this is quick, dirty and free!
