I had a great interview Thursday evening with InfiniteMPG,the Bradenton,FL-based evil genius cache hider who has more than 265 active hides. InfiniteMPG is the alter ego of Scott Veix,a mechanical engineer who brings an engineers problem-solving mindset to geocaching. He shared lots of great advice in our nearly 90 minute conversation, and we could have gone on for another hour. I thought I’d share with you a brief audio clip about his approach to writing descriptions.
Descriptions are more art than science. While the goal is to nudge the cacher toward the prize,Scott also sees them as a way to educate. When you seek out an InfiniteMPG cache, chances are pretty good you’ll learn something about the area or a theme like movies or a favorite book. It all starts with the title,he says. In fact, the cache may take 15 minutes to prepare, but the title an hour to conceive. After that, the description carries forward the theme suggested in the title, embedding cryptic clues in the narrative. Listen to Scott tell about it in his own words.
